Team Rep / Captain Responsibilities
Team must elect or otherwise decide on a Team Rep or Captain to communicate with the League Coordinators, report game and spirit scores, and attend captains meetings.

All team reps must read and understand the following, and are expected to keep themselves and their team informed of all league policies and league announcements. It is also the responsibility of the Team Reps to have read and understand the Rules of Ultimate (UPA - 11th edition rules with amendments) go to www.upa/ultimate/rules to obtain a current copy of these rules.

Other responsibilities of the Team Rep/Captains include:
*To promote the “Spirit of the Game” and to teach the skills and rules of ultimate.
*Promote equal playing time regardless of ability
*Ensure your team will have enough players for each game (see default & postponement rules below)
*Bring cones to games (cones are available from KUPS for a $20 deposit)
*Setting up fields before the game
*Ensure games start and finish on time
*Familiarize, and implement the “add-on” rules for rec. league
*Reporting game and spirit scores to the league coordinator (see below for details)
*Discourage yelling strategy from sidelines or derogatory remarks.
*Ensure playing fields and sidelines are clear of garbage after games.

“Add-on” rules (specific to Rec. league)
Purpose of rules - these rules were cooked up by KUPS to help foster a balanced, spirited, and fun approach to the game of ultimate in the Rec. League. (Feedback is welcome on all of these rules!)

Limit on Number of Veteran Players in Rec. League
This rule was created to ensure balance of play on field for each team & to afford valuable playing time to the new and intermediate players of the league. The role of a veteran player in this league is to promote the “Spirit of the Game” to add structure to the league and to provide a leadership role.

Maximum 3 veteran players per team with a gender break down of max. 2 players from one gender and one from the other. (2 ladies and 1 dude or 2 dudes and 1 lady).
Maximum 2 veteran players on the field at one time. No restriction on the gender balance of these veteran players.
A substitution (sub) list for the primary veteran players is allowed with the following restrictions.
i. The veteran subs will not be eligible for play-offs.
ii. The veteran subs can only attend a game as a player when one of the primary veteran players is absent. This is to limit the amount of veteran players subbing in.

A violation of this rule will result in a default of game determined by the league coordinators.

Co-ed Play
Games, unless otherwise agreed upon by both teams, will be played seven-on-seven and all teams must have at least 3 males and 2 females to avoid default.

The team receiving the pull can select the gender ratio (i.e. 4 men/3 women of 4 women/3 men) and the pulling team must match the ratio. Please be considerate to the other team if they don’t have enough players of one gender.

Only Positive Coaching From the Sideline Strategy
The goal is to mitigate yelling of strategy from the sidelines that tends to confuse a new player. We promote stoppage of play by captains on the field to explain rules of the game, but please keep it to players on the field.

Fields
We co-operate with our field providers to ensure the continued use of their facilities. Please help Ultimate maintain its high community standings by passing the following on to your players.

no beer (to be seen)
*Don’t trash the fields. If the field is too wet, please stay off it.
*Garbage is handled on a carry-it-in and carry-it-out basis. Take a stewardship role and not a "User & Abuser" role.
*Please remove everything that you brought in.
*Please clean up after your pets & keep them leashed up during play of games.
*Alcoholic beverages are not to be seen.
*Be considerate of all the neighbors.

Games
Games start at 6:00. Teams are encouraged to arrive early to warm up as games should begin promptly. Games are to 13 points and hard cap is at 15. A time cap should be imposed by the captains 20 min. before dark . For the time cap, two points are added to the higher score and the game is over when a team reaches that score. If it gets too dark to play, please stop (tie scores are acceptable).

If one team is not ready to play after 10min. of the scheduled start time, the other team, provided they are ready to play, is allowed to start counting one point every 5min. there after (e.g. Team X is ready, Team Y is 20min. late, score X=3, Y=0). If a team is more than 45min. late for a scheduled game, the game may then be considered a win by default by the opposing team.

Recording your Game Scores/Spirit Ratings
Spirit of the Game: "Ultimate has traditionally relied upon a Spirit of Sportsmanship which places the responsibility for fair play on the players themselves. Highly competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of the bond of mutual respect between players, adherence to the agreed upon rules of the game, or the basic joy of play. Protection of these vital elements serves to eliminate adverse conduct from the Ultimate field. Such actions as taunting of opposing players, dangerous aggression, intentional fouling, or other 'win-at-all-costs' behavior are contrary to the Spirit of the Game (SOTG) and must be avoided by all players."

Spirit of the Game is an integral part of Ultimate. After each game, players should agree on a spirit score in the range of 0-5 for their opponents. One method of ensuring team input is to have everyone stand in a circle and indicate a score with their fingers and then take an average.

Captain’s Clause
On the first page of the Rules of Ultimate you will see something called the Captain’s Clause. It basically says that if BOTH CAPTAINS can agree on a variation of the official rules, then they can invoke that rule for their game, providing it does not interfere with the games of other teams. But don’t get pressured by another captain to change the rules if you do not feel comfortable about doing so – pressuring the other captain is a violation of that "spirit" thing discussed earlier.

Postponement of Games
Games can be postponed from the scheduled game time only with the agreement of both teams concerned and if dangerous conditions (lightning, unsafe field conditions etc.) exist. Teams are absolutely expected to postpone the game if dangerous conditions are present or imminent.
* The League Coordinator is to be informed by the teams concerned of any postponements.
* Teams must reschedule postponed games at their earliest convenience (the league coordinators may be able to help with fields for rescheduled games).

Default Games
If you know that your team will not have enough players for a particular game you are required to call the captain of the other team, 24 hours or more before your scheduled game and attempt to reschedule the game - DO NOT RELY ON EMAIL UNLESS YOU GET A REPLY. You are also required to email the league coordinators at the same time and inform him/her of the postponement/cancellation.
* Default occurs when one team cannot obtain their opponent's agreement to postpone a game, dangerous conditions do not exist, and there are no overriding exceptional circumstances.
Penalty
* if no phone call was made to cancel, defaulting team will take a loss and incur a penelty of a negative point (on top of the 0 for the loss) and a spirit score of 0
* if a call is made, you will receive a 0, but will not be penalized and will receive a NULL spirit score (won't count against your average)
* if you can't field a team with your own players, you will be in default - NO EXCEPTIONS

Discipline and Spirit Violations
If there are "spirit violations" originating from one or more of your team members, the league will follow up on any reported incident and use discipline if necessary. The following League rule will apply to spirit violations:
If, after investigation by coordinators, it is found that a player or players were found to be in violation of the spirit of the game during a specified incident, the team will receive a first warning. If another violating incident occurs by a member or members of the same team, a second warning will be issued. If a third warning is necessary, the team or player will be suspended indefinitely from playing in the KUPS Ultimate League.
