The holidays are threatening, and we all know what that means.
Kwanzaa? Hanukkah? The Southern Solstice? Midnight Mass, for those who suffer from chronic, crippling guilt? Fat men wearing all red and touching your babies? Turkey, chocolate and wine being consumed in vast quantities? The chime of a New Year and the realization of time ticking by inexorably? Indoor Ultimate? Even better: All of the above!
Our indoor league has shifted days this year, so that we can get an earlier start. Starting January 8th, we will be running our indoor leagues from 9:00pm -10:30pm every Sunday until March 11th. We will have both fields running concurrently (at the same time!), one Recreational, the other Competitive. This is all happening at the Capital News Centre (CNC), on their rubbery indoor turf fields. Bring cleats, or running shoes, but no metal studs. Best option? Turf cleats, and you can save your ankles. Cost is staying the course at $40 for the season, or a $10 drop-in. Registration and payment will happen at the fields. First timers to Kelowna indoor are, as always, free; so please, bring a friend.
We have moved our Annual General Meeting (AGM) to January, as we have lots to plan for this year.
Sunday, January 22nd @ 7pm, Boomers @ the CNC, indoor to follow.
Canadian Nationals are being hosted by Victoria, British Columbia; which means an elite level tournament is nearby, and accessible. Provided we lose all our turkey weight and remember how to throw a disc, that is. Anyone interested in organizing an Open/Womens/Mixed team would be warmly welcomed by KUPS. Bring your ideas to the AGM.
Sunflicker is a viable fundraising option for either that tourney, or, if you are the best player(s) in Kelowna we don't know about, Worlds in Japan? (Secret: Their have been rumours of a Guts team being formed right here in Kelowna. If you don't know Guts, you don't know a disc being thrown at you as hard as possible from 15 yards away) Either way, we have to find organizational leadership. If interested, please bring your ideas about the tourney and a reasonable statement of intent to the AGM.
New member! Our board is looking for a new Social/Volunteer coordinator. That may sound like an imposing title, but really, it just means you sit in a room with a bunch of Ultimate dorks and think of ways to make the league more complicated. We already have a couple of members looking to join up (applause please!), but we are not ones to turn down offers of assistance. We are accepting names until January 8th. There will be a vote at the AGM if needed.
Speaking of making the league more complicated, the volunteer rebates for Summer League will be refunded at the AGM. Are you a captain of a summer league team? You want your volunteer rebate? Come to the AGM. If possible, drop us a line (communications <at> kelownaultimate <dot> com) and let us know you want some monies. That gives us time to warm up our cheque writing robot. Her name is Beverly. She's not single.
Also, come just to eat appetizers and drink some pitchers that we will pay for. Or just come to throw things at us and call us names. Well... please don't do that. Just be gently critical and then compensate by showering us with praise.
I repeat, AGM on Sunday, January 22nd @ 7pm, Boomers @ the Capital News Centre, indoor to follow.
Any questions, comments, concerns, contact us at (communications <at> kelownaultimate <dot> com)
Look forward to seeing you in the new year.
May your holidays be full of.... whatever you want them to be full of.
Sincerely,
Your KUPS Board members.
